Test the commute before you choose the postcode

Transport maps show possibility. A relocation decision needs repeatability. Before choosing an apartment search area, test the journey as if you already lived there.

Travel at the real hour

Take the route on a weekday at the time you would leave for work. Weekend frequency and traffic can be radically different. If hybrid work means Tuesday and Wednesday in the office, those peak periods matter more than a quiet Friday.

Walk from a plausible residential street, not merely from the station entrance. At the destination, continue to the actual office, campus or industrial gate. The final kilometre often separates a simple-looking regional route from a tiring one.

Count failure points

Every transfer creates a dependency. Note whether the connection is across the platform, upstairs in a large station or at a street-level stop several blocks away. Check the next service if you miss it. A six-minute delay is minor when another tram comes in five minutes and serious when the regional train is hourly.

Look for an alternative route. Large city networks may offer redundancy; smaller systems may offer a wonderfully direct line with no substitute.

Test the return journey

Repeat the check after your likely finish time. Evening frequencies can fall quickly, and a route that works at 08:00 may become awkward after dinner or a late meeting. If you expect cultural events, shift work or regular flights, inspect the last useful connection.

Include the bicycle

Many German cities and regional hubs become more practical when a bicycle covers the first or last section. Examine protected routes, gradients, secure parking and whether a bike can be carried on the relevant train at peak time. Do not assume the map’s shortest road is a comfortable cycle.

Record the experience

Write total door-to-door time, transfers, waiting exposure, crowding, accessibility and backup options. Then multiply the journey by the number of weekly trips. A 12-minute difference sounds small; over a year of office days, it becomes a meaningful slice of life.
